When to Replace a Pump Seal
Pump seal replacement is a condition call, not a calendar one. Goulds Water Technology does not publish an hour-life for an e-SV mechanical seal, and neither do the centrifugal IOMs we stock. You replace the seal when it stops holding the process, or when you already have the wet end open. The 3656 / 3756 S-group IOM is blunt about the second case: a mechanical seal must be replaced whenever it has been removed.
The first question is not "which Goulds pump repair kit." It is whether you still have a seal problem, or whether the shaft, sleeve, or hydraulic stack is already writing the next failure. A replacement seal kit is the cheap, fast path when the faces and elastomers are the only worn parts. A stack kit or a new pump is the right path when they are not.
Seal failure symptoms we treat as replace-now
None of these are a published "seal life" rating. They are the conditions the IOMs warn about, plus the leak you can see at the gland.
A drip at a packed box is not the same as a failed mechanical seal
Goulds 3656 / 3756 packed-box pumps are supposed to weep. The IOM tells you to start the pump and slowly tighten the gland nuts until the leak rate is acceptable. A mechanical seal is the opposite: visible process liquid at the gland is the failure. Do not "snug up" a mechanical seal the way you would packing.
Mechanical Seal Types: Component vs Cartridge, Single vs Double
Order the wrong replacement seal kit and you will be into the pump twice. The two splits that matter on the pumps we sell are how the seal is packaged (component vs cartridge) and how many barriers it has (single vs double).
Component (piece-part) seal
Stationary seat plus a rotary unit you stack onto the shaft. On Goulds e-SV sizes 1SV-22SV this is a rubber-bellows seal; sizes 33SV-125SV use a pusher design as the standard seal. Oberdorfer centrifugals are the same idea: press the seal into the body, soap the wear face into the impeller, never load the spring-loaded carbon face with a tool.
Harder to install. One scratched face and the new kit leaks on startup.
Cartridge seal
A pre-assembled package. Goulds lists a cartridge option on e-SV sizes 33SV-125SV only: balanced design, 40 bar (580 psi), 316SS gland with a vent connection, no dynamic o-ring. It retrofits in place of the standard seal and gland. IM228R10 treats cartridge change-out as its own procedure.
Fewer installation mistakes. Confirm the nameplate seal digit is 7 or 8 before you order one.
Single vs double is a different question. A single seal (one set of faces) is what the e-SV series ships with, component or cartridge. A double (dual) seal puts two seals in series so the second barrier and a sensor can alarm before the process reaches the motor. That is the arrangement on Goulds wastewater pumps we sell as 1GD, 2ED, and 3SD. Do not substitute a single-seal kit into a dual-seal sump or grinder.

Pick the elastomer from the liquid, not the shelf
Goulds maps Viton to chemical and general duty, EPR to hot water and boiler feed, and Aflas to chemical service at elevated temperature (e-SVwhite7). The nameplate seal digit is the orderable version of that choice. Do not "upgrade" to Viton on a hot-water job that was built with EPR.
Two hard faces are for abrasives
Standard e-SV faces are carbon vs silicon carbide. SiC vs SiC (digits 2 and 4, plus cartridge digit 8) is the abrasive option. Graphite-filled SiC is what Goulds credits for intermittent dry-run capability. That is not permission to run dry on purpose: the 3656 IOM and IM228R10 both treat dry-run and zero-flow as seal-killing events.
How to Identify the Right Goulds Pump Repair Kit
The pump label is the catalog number. IM228R10 and both repair-parts books open with the same sentence: the product code on the label is the catalog number, and not every combination is possible. A readable nameplate beats a photo of a rusty wet end. If the plate is gone, send us the serial, a clear photo of the remaining stamp, and the duty (flow, head, liquid, temperature) via contact.
Read the full product code
Copy every character, including the seal digit and any trailing special-config letters (F/G destage, N low NPSH, H horizontal, Z high pressure). A 3SV and a 33SV are different pumps, not a typo.
Split size, stages, and seal
On 1SV-22SV liquid ends the code is size + SV + stages + configuration + motor frame + pole/Hz + seal digit. On 33SV-125SV a cartridge shows up as seal digit 7 or 8. Stack kits drop the motor data and insert an R: 3SVR60 is a 3SV, 6-stage repair stack, seal 0.
Decide seal kit vs stack kit
Seal only when the shaft, sleeve, and impellers are still good. Stack kit when you need the rotating hydraulic assembly. Order the matching o-ring kit (Viton or EPDM) with either one. RESV R9: an e-SV seal kit already includes one gland o-ring and two casing o-rings.

We stock that example. 3SVR60 is on the shelf as a 6-stage 3SV stack kit (catalog `specs.staging` = 6, same decode as the parts books). Same pattern: 1SVR50 is a 5-stage 1SV stack, 10SVR80 is an 8-stage 10SV stack, 22SVR40 is a 4-stage 22SV stack.

Nominal flows: IM228R10 p.3-4 and ReSV R2 p.3-4 (agree). Seal part numbers: ReSV R2 p.13-17 and RESV R9 (agree). 2023 BROeSV R6 headline coverage is higher (up to 725 GPM / 1200 ft) because it is max hydraulic coverage, not the size-by-size nominal.
Aftermarket seats are a last resort, not a shortcut
If the nameplate is readable, order the OEM kit. The US Seal MFG PS Line and Value Guard catalogs are useful when the original pump is obsolete or you only have a seat dimension. They are not a cross to a Goulds seal digit. Send us the OEM code first.
Repair vs Replace: Seal Kit, Stack Kit, or New Pump
We do not have published dollar breakpoints, and we will not invent them. The e-SV literature does give you a time and risk split, which is the decision that actually matters on a live booster.
Seal kit only
e-SVwhite7: shaft separation on every e-SV size lets you reach the seal without removing the motor. Average time to remove, inspect, and replace is about 15 minutes, with a downtime cut of over 45 minutes versus a full teardown. The 2023 brochure says the same design cuts repair time by up to 50%. Use this path when the leak is the only complaint and the shaft/sleeve are clean.
Repair stack
IM228R10 stack removal is a different job: isolate and drain, pull the coupling, lift the motor (crane language is in the IOM), strip the gland or cartridge, pull the tie-rod nuts, then lift the stack. Order a stack kit when impellers, diffusers, or intermediate bushings are worn, destaged, or seized. The seal comes with the stack; do not reuse the old one.
Replace the pump
New e-SV when the casing, motor adapter, or motor is damaged, the code is discontinued and no stack is listed, or you are changing duty (more flow, different elastomer, high-temp seal, cartridge). A kit cannot add a cooling chamber or a Hydrovar that the original unit never had.
Do not run the diagnosis with the pump dry
IM228R10: do not operate at or near zero flow (extreme heat, pump damage, injury). 3656 IOM: do not run the pump dry or the seal is finished. If you need to confirm a leak, isolate, lock out, and look at the gland. Jogging a dry e-SV to "see if it still spins" is how a seal kit becomes a stack kit.
Goulds e-SV Stack and Seal Change, Verified
This is a summary of IM228R10 ("Mechanical Seal Replacement" for 1SV-125SV, the cartridge variant for 33SV-125SV, and "Pump Stack Removal"). It is not a substitute for the manual. Torque values, vent hardware, and motor-frame exceptions are size-specific. Goulds Water Technology also published a walkthrough, e-SV: How to Repair the Stack Assembly and Change a Seal, that uses a 3SV with a 3SVR60 stack kit. Watch it with the IOM open, not instead of the IOM.
Seal only (motor stays)
- Lock out power. IM228R10: disconnect and lock out electrical power before any maintenance.
- Isolate and drain. Close suction and discharge. Remove the drain plug and open the needle valve on the vent plug.
- Open the coupling. Remove the coupling guards, the four coupling hex-cap screws, the coupling, and the coupling drive pin.
- Component seal (all sizes). Remove the four motor hex-cap screws on the seal housing. Slide the housing back, press in a new stationary seat (thumb pressure, cloth over the face, water-based lube), inspect and dress the shaft, then slide the new rotary unit down. On 33SV-125SV, clock the pin on the rotary into the holes in the shaft sleeve. Cycle the rotary to lube the o-ring so it does not stick.
- Cartridge seal (33SV-125SV only). New o-ring on the turned fit, lube the ID o-ring, slide the cartridge between pump and motor shafts into position. After the coupling goes back on, tighten the four collar set screws. Vent through the cartridge connections, not the standard vent alone.
- Reassemble. New seal-housing o-ring, housing back on, four screws to the IOM torque table, coupling pin and 5 mm space shim (or the factory shim), coupling halves torqued, shim pulled and saved, shaft rotated by hand, guards back on.
- Vent before start. IM228R10 section 3: a 1SV / 3SV / 5SV uses the drain-plug pin; 10SV-125SV uses the needle valve in the vent plug; a cartridge unit also has a vent on the gland plate under the coupling. Prime completely. Do not start at zero flow.
Stack removal (motor comes off)
Same isolation and drain. Pull the coupling. On 33SV-125SV with 213TC and larger motors, and on 1SV-22SV with 280TC and larger, the motor-adapter flange screws come out too. Lift the motor with an adequately sized crane. Do not rest it on the shaft. Then:
- 1SV-22SV gland: four socket-head cap screws, lift the seal gland.
- 33SV-125SV component gland: four socket-head screws; if it does not lift by hand, use the two tapped jacking holes.
- 33SV-125SV cartridge: loosen the four set screws on the shaft, remove the four socket-head screws, jack the cartridge out with two screws in the gland tap holes, then lift it.
- Tie rods and adapter. Four tie-rod nuts and washers off. Lift the motor adapter (1SV-22SV: the upper seal plate may come with it). 33SV-125SV: the motor-adapter assembly is heavy enough that the IOM calls a crane.
- Stack. Grasp the shaft, rock it free, lift vertically. If the first-stage bowl stays in the body, pry it up carefully. Wear gloves: the IOM flags sharp edges.
Torque and pressure are size-specific
IM228R10 engineering data: motor bolts 20 lb-ft (0.75-7.5 HP) or 45 lb-ft (10-75 HP). Coupling bolts 15 lb-ft on 1-5SV, 40 lb-ft on 10-22SV, 37 or 48 lb-ft on 33-92SV. Tie-rod nuts 18 / 22 / 44 lb-ft by size group. Oval-flange 1SV-22SV max working pressure is 232 psi (16 bar), not the 362 / 580 psi ratings of the round-flange builds. Use the table in the IOM that matches the unit in your hand.

Utility centrifugal and diaphragm repair kits. Model + elastomer (Buna, EPDM, Viton, Santoprene) have to match the liquid, not the kit that happens to be in the truck.
Gear and centrifugal kits. The Oberdorfer seal-replacement sheet is the component-seal procedure: press the old seal out from the motor side toward the impeller chamber, never load the carbon face, soap the new wear face into the impeller.

Mistakes That Turn a Seal Kit into a Stack Kit
Ordering by "3SV" instead of the full code
3SV is a 16 GPM nominal size, not a kit. Stage count, seal digit, destage, and low-NPSH options all change the stack. 3SVR60 is one specific 6-stage, seal-0 stack. A 3SV with a high-temp Aflas seal is digit 1, not a 10K168 pulled from the bin.
Reusing a seal you just pulled
3656 IOM: replace the mechanical seal whenever it has been removed. IM228R10 has you install a new seat, new rotary or cartridge, and a new housing o-ring. The old faces have already been disturbed.
Pressing on the carbon face
Oberdorfer says press only on the metal flange, never the spring-loaded carbon face. IM228R10 says thumb pressure, a clean cloth over the face, no excessive force. A scratched seat leaks on the first start and looks like "a bad kit."
Skipping lockout, vent, and prime
Hazardous voltage and a hot, pressurized volute are how seal jobs become injuries. IM228R10 wants the pump isolated, drained, and then fully primed and vented before the next start. A cartridge seal has its own vent on the gland.
Mixing Viton and EPR hardware
O-ring kits, plugs, and the seal digit have to stay on the same elastomer family. RESV R9 lists separate Viton and EPDM o-ring kits, gland o-rings, and plug sets. A Viton seal on EPDM casing rings is a leak waiting for heat.

What is a Goulds pump repair kit?
On e-SV it is either a seal kit (the mechanical seal plus the gland and casing o-rings called out in RESV R9) or a stack kit (the rotating hydraulic assembly, coded like 3SVR60). How do I pick a replacement seal kit?
Read the size, stage count, and seal digit off the pump label. For e-SV, digits 0/1/2/4/6 are component seals and 7/8 are cartridges on 33SV-125SV only. Match faces and elastomer to that digit. 10K168 is the standard Carbon/SiC/Viton kit for 1SV-5SV; 10K169 covers 10SV-22SV; 10L38 is the 33SV-125SV standard; 10K163 is the 33SV-125SV Viton cartridge.
When should I replace a pump seal?
When process liquid shows at the gland, after a dry-run or dead-head that cooked the faces, when the shaft or sleeve is scored, or whenever you have already pulled the seal (3656 IOM). There is no published hour interval in the e-SV or 3656 literature we used for this guide.
Can I change an e-SV seal without pulling the motor?
Yes. e-SVwhite7 and the 2023 BROeSV R6 brochure both describe shaft separation so the mechanical seal comes out without motor removal, about 15 minutes for a standard swap. Stack replacement is the job that needs a crane and the motor off (IM228R10).
What is the difference between a component seal and a cartridge seal?
A component seal is a seat plus a rotary you assemble on the shaft (e-SV bellows on 1SV-22SV, pusher on 33SV-125SV). A cartridge is a pre-assembled, balanced package with a vented 316SS gland, 40 bar (580 psi), offered only on 33SV-125SV as nameplate digits 7 and 8.
Is 3SVR60 the right kit for every 3SV?
No. 3SVR60 is a 6-stage 3SV repair stack with standard Carbon/SiC/Viton faces. A 3SV with a different stage count, destage letters, low-NPSH option, or seal digit 1/2/4/6 needs a different stack code. Confirm the label.
