"Dry" Start-Up Warning: A self-priming pump is not a dry-running pump. You must manually fill the pump casing with liquid once through the fill plug before the very first start. The pump then retains that liquid for all future "self-primes."
Suction Line Integrity: Because the pump creates a vacuum to lift liquid, the suction line must be 100% airtight. Even a tiny pinhole leak in the piping will prevent the pump from ever reaching its prime.
Draining in Winter: Since the casing is designed to hold liquid to remain primed, it must be drained in freezing weather if not in use, or the expanding ice will crack even a steel casing.
