Overview

The Summit 2196R is the recessed‑impeller member of the ANSI B73.1 family, designed for solids‑handling and shear‑sensitive applications. Its vortex impeller sits out of the main flow path, creating a wide, unobstructed passage through the casing. This reduces contact between solids and the impeller, minimizes shear, and prevents clogging in fibrous or stringy fluids.

Hydraulics

The 2196R handles flows up to 2,500 GPM and heads up to 300 ft. The recessed impeller provides exceptional solids passage and reliability, with reduced efficiency compared to standard ANSI hydraulics. The spherical casing geometry maintains velocity and prevents material buildup.

Materials

Wetted components are available in Ductile Iron, 316 Stainless Steel, CD4MCu, Alloy‑20, and Hastelloy C. Sleeve options include standard 316 stainless or NCB/HMC hard‑coated sleeves for abrasive or slurry‑laden service. Material offerings align with Goulds 3196R and PumpWorks PWA‑R equivalents.

Mechanical Design

The 2196R uses a vortex impeller, spherical casing, confined gasket, integral foot support, and self‑venting design. External impeller adjustment maintains performance as clearances change. The stuffing box or seal chamber accepts packing, single seals, double seals, and common API piping plans.

Power Ends

STO, MTO, LTO, and XLO frames cover the R‑series hydraulic range. Power ends include SKF bearings, labyrinth isolators, magnetic drain plug, enlarged oil reservoir, and sight glass. All frames interchange with 2196 and 2196LF units, as well as Goulds 3196R and PumpWorks PWA‑R equivalents. The Forever Frame™ stainless power end is available for corrosive or washdown environments.

Serviceability

The 2196R uses the same back‑pull‑out rotating assembly as the rest of the 2196 family. Shaft kits, power ends, and rotating assemblies are shared across the series, simplifying maintenance and reducing spare‑parts inventory.

Applications

Slurries, fibrous materials, wastewater streams, pulp stock, solids‑laden chemical service, and shear‑sensitive fluids where reliability and solids passage matter more than peak efficiency.
